Just a few years ago, electric vehicles were still somewhat of a novelty. You might encounter one in the wild occasionally, but by and large it was a segment in no particular rush to flood dealerships with sustainable, affordable vehicles.
Fast forward to today, where the EV market – and the electric SUV segment in particular – has grown exponentially more competitive. This summer, Volvo throws its hat into the EV SUV ring with the 2025 Volvo EX30, an all-electric, entry-level, luxury compact SUV that is small, affordable… and potentially groundbreaking.
Meet the EX30
Volvo is using the EX prefix to denote its next-gen EVs. When the EX30 goes on sale, it will join the larger EX90 SUV in the brand’s growing lineup of electric SUVs. Aside from its more compact size, what really sets the EX30 from the EX90 is its starting price point; while the EX90 starts at $77,990, the Volvo EX30 boasts an attractive starting price of $36,245. Clearly, Volvo sees a path for the EX30 to dominate this burgeoning segment.
Thankfully, the Volvo EX30 has the goods to back up such confidence. Its 64.0-kWh battery pack provides up to 275 miles of driving per charge in its rear-wheel-drive models (265 miles for AWD). With a DC fast-charging connection and a peak charging rate of 153 kW, the Volvo EX30 can hit up to 80% charge in under an hour.
Sustainable Driving Personified
The EX30’s interior, including its upholstery, contributes towards Volvo’s sustainability mission by using recycled materials. The cabin is quite minimalist – keeping with Volvo’s Scandinavian design strategy – but you’ll still discover subtle details that add personality, such as cupholders that fold up to clear space when not in use.
For both infotainment and gauge display, the EX30 relies on a single, 12.3-inch, vertically oriented screen. The glove compartment is located beneath the screen for the driver’s convenience. And rather than feature a multitude of speakers throughout the cabin, the EX30’s stereo system is represented by a soundbar that runs the length of the dashboard. Additionally, the EX30 comes with several key safety features, including:
- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
- Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
- Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature.
