Consumer trends point towards electric vehicles and while plug-in hybrids were a great stepping-stone in the transition to electric, Volvo is investing fully in their electric future. Their pledge to be fully electric by 2030, growing EV infrastructure, and consumer demand have caused quite the shakeup in the auto industry!
The S60 Plug-in Hybrid
Debuting in 2000, the S60 has survived three generations with its luxurious interior and well-balanced ride. Its excellent plug-in hybrid had a sizeable 41-mile range before gasoline. However, after its 2025 release, the S60 will be part of North American automotive history as the final iteration of the vehicle. Plug-in Hybrids were a great step into the slowly adapting electric vehicle wave in the US, but with growing infrastructure, faster-charging cars, and a push for environmental responsibility by corporations, gas-powered cars may soon be a thing of the past. Several general release automakers have pledged to become fully electric in the next few decades, and Volvo insists on leading major premium car brands to commit to an all-electric future.
Volvo’s Electric Future
“We are determined to be the first premium car maker to move our entire portfolio of vehicles into electrification. This is a clear commitment towards reducing our carbon footprint, as well as contributing to better air quality in our cities,” said Volvo’s CEO, affirming their 2021 announcement to be fully electric by 2030. In coming years Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models, with more to follow. By 2025, Volvo aims for 50% of its global sales to be completely made up of electric cars, with hybrids making the remaining percentage. By 2030, every car the company sells is intended to be fully electric.
In May 2024, Volvo saw a 13% increase in car sales, largely boosted by EVs. Currently, their largest obstacle to achieving their ever-nearer goal are tariffs by the US and EU on China, where production had been concentrated. However, Volvo has pivoted brilliantly and moved EV production to Belgium, the United States, and other locations – strengthening the economy and creating jobs. This change has caused some delays in current production, but Volvo is confident in its path forward.
